Συζήτηση και αντιδράσεις προκαλεί η ανάρτηση του βουλευτή Λάρνακας του ΕΛΑΜ, Σωτήρη Ιωάννου, ο οποίος θέτει ζήτημα σχετικά με τη χρήση τοπωνυμίων των κατεχόμενων περιοχών της Κύπρου. Ο κ. Ιωάννου επισημαίνει τη χρήση ονομασιών που έχουν επιβληθεί από το κατοχικό καθεστώς, αντί των ιστορικών ελληνικών ονομασιών των πόλεων και χωριών της κατεχόμενης πατρίδας μας, επαναφέροντας στο προσκήνιο μια διαχρονική και ιδιαίτερα ευαίσθητη συζήτηση. Σε μια περίοδο όπου η διατήρηση της ιστορικής και εθνικής ταυτότητας παραμένει ζητούμενο, το ζήτημα της ονοματοδοσίας αποκτά εκ νέου πολιτικές και συμβολικές διαστάσεις, προκαλώντας προβληματισμό ως προς τον δημόσιο λόγο και τις επιλογές που αυτός αποτυπώνει.
Στην ελληνοκυπριακή πλευρά —και ιδιαίτερα σε επίσημο λόγο— θεωρείται ορθό να χρησιμοποιούνται οι ελληνικές, ιστορικές ονομασίες των κατεχόμενων πόλεων και χωριών (π.χ. Αμμόχωστος αντί “Gazimağusa”, Κερύνεια αντί “Girne”, Μόρφου αντί “Güzelyurt”). Η πρακτική αυτή δεν αποτελεί απλώς ζήτημα γλωσσικής επιλογής, αλλά και πολιτικής στάσης, καθώς υπογραμμίζει τη συνέχεια της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας και αποφεύγει την έμμεση αναγνώριση των δεδομένων που επέβαλε η τουρκική εισβολή και η συνεχιζόμενη κατοχή.
Σε διεθνές πλαίσιο, σε χάρτες, μέσα ενημέρωσης ή διπλωματική επικοινωνία, συχνά χρησιμοποιούνται και οι τουρκικές ονομασίες για λόγους κατανόησης και αναγνωρισιμότητας από το διεθνές κοινό. Ωστόσο, στο εσωτερικό θεσμικό λόγο θεωρείται εύλογο να προτιμώνται οι ελληνικές ονομασίες. Αντίστοιχα, στον διεθνή ή διπλωματικό λόγο, γίνεται συχνά διπλή αναφορά (π.χ. «Αμμόχωστος / Famagusta») για αποφυγή σύγχυσης.
Σημειώνεται ότι, μέχρι στιγμής, το ΑΚΕΛ δεν έχει προχωρήσει σε οποιαδήποτε δημόσια απάντηση ή επεξήγηση επί του θέματος.

Τι μήνυμα ακριβώς θέλει να δώσει το επίσημο ΑΚΕΛ χρησιμοποιώντας στα Μέσα Κοινωνικής Δικτύωσης τοπωνύμια της κατεχόμενης μας Πατρίδας όπως αυτά έχουν αλλοιωθεί παράνομα από το κατοχικό καθεστώς;
Από πότε η Κερύνεια έγινε “Girne” και η Αμμόχωστος “Magusa”;
Η πράξη αυτή του ΑΚΕΛ προσβάλλει βάναυσα την ίδια την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία. Η Τουρκία επιχειρεί τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες να παραχαράξει πλήρως την ιστορική ταυτότητα των κατεχόμενων μας εδαφών. Το ΑΚΕΛ με αυτή του την ενέργεια τι ακριβώς θέλει να πετύχει;
Αν έκαναν λάθος να ΑΠΟΣΥΡΟΥΝ άμεσα την εικόνα και να ΑΠΟΛΟΓΗΘΟΥΝ στον Κυπριακό λαό.
Αν όχι, τότε ας βγάλει ο καθένας τα συμπεράσματά του!

Discussion and reactions have been sparked by a post by ELAM MP for Larnaca, Sotiris Ioannou, who raises an issue regarding the use of toponyms of Cyprus’ occupied areas. Mr. Ioannou points to the use of names imposed by the occupation regime instead of the historical Greek names of the cities and villages of our occupied homeland, bringing once again to the forefront a long-standing and particularly sensitive debate. In a period where the preservation of historical and national identity remains a key concern, the issue of naming takes on renewed political and symbolic dimensions, prompting reflection on public discourse and the choices it reflects.
On the Greek Cypriot side — and particularly in official discourse — it is considered correct to use the Greek, historical names of the occupied cities and villages (e.g. Famagusta instead of “Gazimağusa”, Kyrenia instead of “Girne”, Morphou instead of “Güzelyurt”). This practice is not merely a matter of linguistic preference, but also of political stance, as it underlines the continuity of the Republic of Cyprus and avoids indirect recognition of the facts imposed by the Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation.
In an international context, on maps, in media, or in diplomatic communication, Turkish names are often also used for reasons of understanding and recognisability by the international community. However, in internal institutional discourse, it is considered reasonable to prefer the Greek names. Similarly, in international or diplomatic language, dual references are often used (e.g. “Famagusta / Gazimağusa”) to avoid confusion.
It is noted that, so far, AKEL has not issued any public response or clarification on the matter.

What exactly message does the official AKEL want to send by using, on social media, toponyms of our occupied homeland as they have been unlawfully altered by the occupation regime?
Since when did Kyrenia become “Girne” and Famagusta “Magusa”?
This act by AKEL gravely insults the Republic of Cyprus itself. Turkey has been attempting for decades to completely distort the historical identity of our occupied territories. What exactly is AKEL trying to achieve with this action?
If they made a mistake, they should immediately withdraw the image and APOLOGISE to the Cypriot people.
If not, then let everyone draw their own conclusions.
