«Όταν οι ναζιστές ήρθαν για να πάρουν τους κομμουνιστές, σιώπησα επειδή δεν ήμουν κομμουνιστής.
Όταν φυλάκισαν τους σοσιαλδημοκράτες, σιώπησα γιατί δεν ήμουν σοσιαλδημοκράτης.
Όταν ήρθαν να πάρουν τους συνδικαλιστές, σιώπησα γιατί δεν ήμουν συνδικαλιστής.
Όταν ήρθαν να πάρουν τους Εβαίους σιώπησα γιατί δεν ήμουν Εβραίος.
Όταν ήρθαν να συλλάβουν εμένα, δεν υπήρχε πια κανείς για να διαμαρτυρηθεί».
