Ζούμε σε μια χώρα που δεν έχουμε μάθει να είμαστε Προμηθείς, είμαστε Επιμηθείς. Αλλά, σαν να μην φτάνει αυτό, δεν έχουμε καν τη δύναμη και το θάρρος να πάρουμε την ευθύνη εκεί που μας αναλογεί και να πούμε ένα τίμιο mea culpa. Από την άλλη, στη χώρα αυτή οι πολιτικοί και οι κυβερνήσεις κρίνονται με δύο μέτρα και δύο σταθμά. Το πώς θα κριθούν το αποφασίζει η καλή ή η κακή πολιτική επικοινωνία και η μάζα των μέσων κοινωνικής δικτύωσης.
Έτσι, λοιπόν, σε μια κατάσταση με αριστερή κυβέρνηση έχεις αγανακτισμένους να ζητούν την παραίτηση του Προέδρου και του Υπουργού Άμυνας. Σε μια άλλη, παρόμοια κατάσταση, δεν φταίει ούτε ο Πρόεδρος ούτε ο Υπουργός Άμυνας. Και η ζωή στη χώρα αυτή κυλά μια χαρά, με δυο-τρεις τρομάρες και με παρωπίδες φανατισμού, ξεροκεφαλιάς και, ενίοτε, μισαλλοδοξίας.
Είναι ευτύχημα και δόξα τω Θεώ που δεν θρηνήσαμε θύματα χθες με την πυρκαγιά που ξέσπασε σε Καλό χωριό, Αγία Άννα και γύρω χωριά.
Αλλά κάηκε η φύση, το πράσινο, τα βουνά. Συγκινεί, συγκλονίζει και προβληματίζει η δήλωση κατοίκου της περιοχής: «Τούτο που ζήσαμε ήταν το χειρότερο. Τα βουνά που κρούσασιν ήταν τα βουνά που περπατούσαμε που μωρά».
Κρούζει η γη μας. Και εμείς δεν έχουμε καν το θάρρος να πούμε ποιοι φταίνε, για να μην ξαναγίνουν τα ίδια λάθη. Μόνο ατάκες, κύριε Υπουργέ.
Ατάκες και σωστή επικοινωνιακή διαχείριση, τούτη είναι η έγνοια μας, όσο η γη μας είτε καίγεται είτε ξεπουλιέται σε ξένους επενδυτές.
Είμαστε ακόμη ανέτοιμοι για διαχείριση πυρκαγιών. Όσα και αν πάθαμε, δεν μάθαμε. Από την άλλη, είμαστε πάντα πανέτοιμοι να ρίξουμε ευθύνες αλλού.
Για κάθε δέντρο που καίγεται ας φυτέψουμε ακόμη δέκα και για κάθε κομμάτι γης που καίγεται ας ψηφιστεί μια νομοθεσία που να απαγορεύει την άμεση πώλησή της. Έτσι, για να καθησυχάσουμε τα σενάρια που λένε πως καίτε τη γη μας για να την ξεπουλήσετε φθηνά στους ξένους!
Μπράβο στον Κοινοτάρχη Αγίας Άννας που μίλησε ξεκάθαρα σε μια πατρίδα όπου το «ξεκάθαρα» έχασε την έννοιά του, όπως και το «δεσμεύομαι».
Ο κ. Γεωργίου Αναστάσης μίλησε έξω από τα δόντια: «Θέλω να κατηγορήσω απευθείας τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας και τον Υπουργό Άμυνας. Είναι απαράδεκτο αυτά τα πράγματα. Να γυρεύουμε τους εγκληματίες που βάζουν φωτιές και τις φωτιές να τις βάζουν οι ίδιοι».
Για να λυθεί ένα πρόβλημα πρέπει να έχουμε την τόλμη να το εντοπίσουμε χωρίς παρωπίδες. Όσο οι παρωπίδες καλά κρατούν, το πρόβλημα με τις πυρκαγιές δεν θα λύνεται. Και ναι, καίγεται όλη η Ευρώπη (Ισπανία, Ιταλία κ.ά.), ας είμαστε τουλάχιστον έτοιμοι για τις πυρκαγιές. Όχι να μην μπορούμε καν να ενημερώσουμε τον κόσμο και να χρειάζεται να χτυπήσουμε καμπάνες, όπως έγινε χθες!
Κλείνω το σύντομο άρθρο με μια χαρά ότι, τουλάχιστον, δεν θρηνήσαμε θύματα χθες και ο πύρινος εφιάλτης έληξε σχετικά σύντομα.

Στους βουλευτές Λάρνακας που αθόρυβα μετέβησαν στον χώρο και έκαναν ό,τι μπορούσαν, ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΟΥΜΕ. Ναι, υπάρχουν οι βουλευτές των αναρτήσεων και οι άλλοι των έργων. Διαλέγεις και παίρνεις.
Unprepared for Wildfires, Fully Prepared to Shift the Blame!

We live in a country that has never learned to be Promethean; instead, we are Epimethean. But, as if that were not enough, we do not even have the strength and courage to take responsibility where it belongs and utter an honest mea culpa. At the same time, in this country politicians and governments are judged by double standards. Whether they are condemned or excused is determined by good or bad political communication and the masses on social media.
Thus, when a left-wing government is in power, outraged voices demand the resignation of the President and the Minister of Defence. In another, similar situation, neither the President nor the Minister of Defence is to blame. And so, life in this country goes on just fine—with two or three scares here and there, and with the blinkers of fanaticism, stubbornness and, at times, intolerance firmly in place.
It is a blessing, and thanks be to God, that we did not mourn any victims yesterday following the wildfire that broke out in Kalo Chorio, Agia Anna and the surrounding villages.
But nature burned. The greenery burned. The mountains burned. The words of a resident of the area are moving, heartbreaking and deeply troubling: “What we lived through was the worst. The mountains that burned were the mountains we walked as children.”
Our land is crying out. And yet we do not even have the courage to say who is responsible, so that the same mistakes are not repeated. Only slogans, Mr Minister. Slogans and proper communications management—this is what concerns us while our land is either burning or being sold off to foreign investors.
We remain unprepared to deal with wildfires. No matter how many lessons we have been given, we have learned nothing. Yet we are always fully prepared to shift the blame elsewhere.
For every tree that burns, let us plant ten more. And for every piece of land that is scorched, let legislation be passed prohibiting its immediate sale. If nothing else, it may put to rest the claims that our land is being burned so that it can be sold off cheaply to foreign buyers.
Bravo to the Community Leader of Agia Anna, who spoke plainly in a homeland where the very meaning of the words “plainly” and “I commit” has long been lost.
Mr Georgiou Anastasis did not mince his words: “I want to directly accuse the President of the Republic and the Minister of Defence. This is unacceptable. We are out looking for the criminals who start fires, while the fires are being started by those very people.”
To solve a problem, we must first have the courage to identify it without ideological blinkers. As long as those blinkers remain firmly in place, the problem of wildfires will never be resolved. And yes, all of Europe is burning—Spain, Italy and others—but let us at least be prepared for wildfires. Not find ourselves unable even to warn the public, forcing us to ring church bells, as happened yesterday.
I conclude this brief article with the relief that, at the very least, we did not mourn any victims yesterday and that the fiery nightmare came to an end relatively quickly.

To the Members of Parliament for Larnaca who quietly went to the scene and did whatever they could, THANK YOU. Yes, there are MPs of social media posts and there are MPs of deeds. The choice is yours.
