Εδώ και βδομάδες δεχόμασταν παράπονα για τον πύργο ναυαγοσωστών στην Ορόκλινη, ο οποίος παρέμενε χωρίς ναυαγοσώστη. Ανάμεσα σε όσους εξέφραζαν την ανησυχία τους για το ζήτημα ήταν και η διεύθυνση του ξενοδοχείου που βρίσκεται μπροστά από τη συγκεκριμένη παραλία.
Το θέμα, βεβαίως, αποτελεί αρμοδιότητα του Υπουργείου Εσωτερικών και της Επαρχιακής Διοίκησης και όχι του Δήμου Λάρνακας. Ωστόσο, ο Δήμος Λάρνακας οφείλει πλέον να ασκεί έντονες πιέσεις προς κάθε αρμόδιο φορέα όταν διαπιστώνονται ελλείψεις σε ναυαγοσώστες σε πολυσύχναστες παραλίες.
Το σημερινό δημοσίευμα του «Φιλελευθέρου» καθιστά την τραγική αυτή υπόθεση ακόμη πιο οδυνηρή, καθώς, σύμφωνα με μαρτυρίες που καταγράφονται στο ρεπορτάζ, οι δύο νεαρές γυναίκες που έχασαν τη ζωή τους ενδεχομένως να είχαν σωθεί εάν υπήρχε ναυαγοσώστης στην παραλία.
Έπρεπε να χαθούν δύο ζωές για να αντιληφθούν το Υπουργείο Εσωτερικών και η Επαρχιακή Διοίκηση πόσο σημαντική είναι η έγκαιρη στελέχωση των πύργων ναυαγοσωστών;
Όπως μετέδωσε το philenews, ένας πατέρας που βρισκόταν στη θάλασσα με φουσκωτή βάρκα και τον εξάχρονο γιο του έσπευσε να βοηθήσει τις δύο γυναίκες. Πρόκειται για τον Αντώνη Γαβαλά, ο οποίος περιέγραψε τις αγωνιώδεις προσπάθειές του να τις ανασύρει από τη θάλασσα.
Σύμφωνα με τη μαρτυρία του, κατάφερε να εντοπίσει και να μεταφέρει τη μία κοπέλα στα βράχια του κυματοθραύστη, ενώ στη συνέχεια, με τη βοήθεια άλλου πολίτη, ανέσυρε και τη δεύτερη. Ακολούθως, στην περιοχή έφτασαν σκάφη των αρμόδιων αρχών για τη μεταφορά τους.
Ιδιαίτερη σημασία έχει η αναφορά του αυτόπτη μάρτυρα στο γεγονός ότι ο πύργος ναυαγοσωστών δεν έχει ακόμη στελεχωθεί και αναμένεται να λειτουργήσει από την 1η Ιουλίου.
«Στην παραλία δεν υπήρχε ναυαγοσώστης, γι’ αυτό πήγα να βοηθήσω. Αν υπήρχε ναυαγοσώστης, πιστεύω ότι οι κοπέλες θα είχαν σωθεί. Στα κενά μεταξύ των κυματοθραυστών το βάθος φτάνει περίπου τα τρία μέτρα, ενώ αναπτύσσονται και ρεύματα. Όπου υπάρχουν κυματοθραύστες, πρέπει να υπάρχουν και ναυαγοσώστες», ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά.
Η τραγωδία σημειώθηκε το απόγευμα της Πέμπτης, όταν παρέα πέντε φίλων από τη Σομαλία εισήλθε στη θάλασσα. Κάποια στιγμή οι δύο νεαρές γυναίκες απομακρύνθηκαν από τις υπόλοιπες και οι φίλες τους άρχισαν να καλούν σε βοήθεια. Στην περιοχή στήθηκε μεγάλη επιχείρηση έρευνας και διάσωσης από το ΚΣΕΔ, το οποίο ενεργοποίησε το Εθνικό Σχέδιο Έρευνας και Διάσωσης «Νέαρχος».
Δυστυχώς, όπως συμβαίνει συχνά σε αυτόν τον τόπο, προηγείται η τραγωδία και ακολουθούν τα μέτρα που έπρεπε να είχαν ληφθεί εγκαίρως.
If Lifeguards Had Been Present, Two Lives Could Have Been Saved, Witnesses Say – Is the Ministry of Interior and the District Administration Listening?

For weeks, we had been receiving complaints about the lifeguard tower in Oroklini, which remained unmanned. Among those expressing concern about the issue was the management of the hotel located directly in front of the beach in question.
The matter, of course, falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Interior and the District Administration, not the Municipality of Larnaca. Nevertheless, the Municipality of Larnaca must now exert strong pressure on all competent authorities whenever lifeguard shortages are identified on busy beaches.
Today’s report by Phileleftheros makes this tragic case even more heartbreaking, as witness testimonies cited in the report suggest that the two young women who lost their lives might have been saved had a lifeguard been on duty at the beach.
Did two lives have to be lost before the Ministry of Interior and the District Administration realized how crucial the timely staffing of lifeguard towers truly is?
As reported by philenews, a father who was at sea in an inflatable boat with his six-year-old son rushed to assist the two women. The man, Antonis Gavalas, described his desperate efforts to pull them from the water.
According to his testimony, he managed to locate and bring one of the young women onto the rocks of the breakwater. He then found the second woman and, with the assistance of another bystander, brought her onto the rocks as well. Shortly afterwards, vessels from the competent authorities arrived at the scene to transport them.
Particularly significant is the eyewitness’s statement that the lifeguard tower has not yet been staffed and is only expected to become operational on July 1.
“There was no lifeguard on the beach, which is why I went to help. If there had been a lifeguard, I believe the girls would have been saved. Between the breakwaters, the depth reaches about three metres, and there are also strong currents. Wherever there are breakwaters, there should be lifeguards as well,” he stated.
The tragedy occurred on Thursday evening when a group of five friends from Somalia entered the sea. At some point, the two young women drifted away from the others, and their friends began calling for help. A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched in the area by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), which activated the national search and rescue plan “Nearchos.”
Unfortunately, as is so often the case in this country, tragedy strikes first, and only afterwards are the measures taken that should have been implemented in time.
