Παρά τη μακρόχρονη πολιτική του διαδρομή και την ιδιότητά του ως πρώην βουλευτή Λάρνακας με το Δημοκρατικό Κόμμα (ΔΗΚΟ) κατά την περίοδο 1996–2011, ο Νίκος Κλεάνθους δεν έλαβε απάντηση στην επιστολή που απέστειλε πριν από έναν μήνα προς τον Δήμαρχο Λάρνακας, Ανδρέας Βύρας, καθώς και προς την Επιτροπή Ανάπτυξης του Δήμου.
Στην επιστολή του ζητούσε να του επιτραπεί να παραστεί σε συνεδρίες της Επιτροπής Ανάπτυξης, ιδιαίτερα στη σημερινή η οποία θεωρείται ιδιαίτερα κρίσιμη, καθώς αφορά το θέμα λιμάνι–μαρίνα και πραγματοποιείται στην παρουσία του Υπουργού Μεταφορών, Επικοινωνιών και Έργων, Αλέξης Βαφεάδης.
Παρά το γεγονός ότι, σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες, πρώην δήμαρχοι – όπως ο Ανδρέας Μωυσέως – έχουν τη δυνατότητα να παρίστανται σε συνεδριάσεις, στον κ. Κλεάνθους δεν δόθηκε σχετική απάντηση.
Με αφορμή τη σημερινή συνεδρία, το SkalaTimes συνομίλησε με τον κ. Κλεάνθους, έναν πολιτικό που για δεκαετίες ασχολήθηκε ενεργά με το ζήτημα του λιμανιού και της μαρίνας Λάρνακας και διαθέτει βαθιά γνώση του θέματος.
Ο Νίκος Κλεάνθους υπήρξε ένα από τα ιδρυτικά μέλη του Δημοκρατικό Κόμμα (ΔΗΚΟ) το 1976 και διετέλεσε πρόεδρος της Επαρχιακής Επιτροπής ΔΗΚΟ Λάρνακας. Το 1977 διορίστηκε από το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο, επί προεδρίας του Αρχιεπίσκοπος Μακάριος Γ΄, στην Επιτροπή Έρευνας για την Κάθαρση σε σχέση με το πραξικόπημα του 1974.
Διετέλεσε γραμματέας της Σχολικής Εφορίας Λάρνακας, μέλος της δικαστικής επιτροπής της Κυπριακή Ομοσπονδία Ποδοσφαίρου (ΚΟΠ) και μέλος του Συμβουλίου Ευημερίας Ασθενών του Γενικού Νοσοκομείου Λάρνακας.
Σε κομματικό επίπεδο, υπήρξε μέλος του Εκτελεστικού Γραφείου και της Κεντρικής Επιτροπής του ΔΗΚΟ, ενώ το 1998 εξελέγη αναπληρωτής πρόεδρος του κόμματος, θέση στην οποία παρέμεινε έως το 2006. Στις 22 Οκτωβρίου 2006 διεκδίκησε την προεδρία του ΔΗΚΟ, με τον Μάριος Καρογιάν να εκλέγεται τελικά στη θέση.
Εξελέγη βουλευτής Λάρνακας στις βουλευτικές εκλογές του 1996 και επανεξελέγη το 2001 και το 2006. Το 2011 διεκδίκησε επανεκλογή χωρίς να επιτύχει την εκλογή του.
Κατά τη θητεία του στη Βουλή, διετέλεσε, μεταξύ άλλων, κοινοβουλευτικός εκπρόσωπος του ΔΗΚΟ, πρόεδρος της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων, αναπληρωτής πρόεδρος της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Συγκοινωνιών και Έργων και της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Εξωτερικών και Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων, καθώς και μέλος της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Θεσμών, Αξιών και Επιτρόπου Διοικήσεως.
Επιπλέον, υπήρξε πρόεδρος της αντιπροσωπίας της Βουλής στη Μικτή Κοινοβουλευτική Επιτροπή Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης–Κύπρου, αρχηγός της αντιπροσωπίας της Βουλής στη Διάσκεψη των Επιτροπών Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων των Κοινοβουλίων των κρατών-μελών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και ένας εκ των τριών αντιπροέδρων της Εκτελεστικής Επιτροπής της Κυπριακής Ομάδας στη Διακοινοβουλευτική Ένωση.
Nikos Cleanthous Was Not Allowed to Attend the Development Committee Meeting
Despite his long political career and his capacity as a former Member of Parliament for Larnaca with Democratic Party (DIKO) from 1996 to 2011, Nikos Cleanthous received no response to the letter he sent one month ago to the Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, as well as to the Municipality’s Development Committee.
In his letter, he requested permission to attend today’s meeting of the Development Committee, which is considered particularly critical as it concerns the port–marina issue and is being held in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades.
Although, according to information, former mayors – such as Andreas Moses – are able to attend such meetings, Mr. Cleanthous was not given any response.
On the occasion of today’s meeting, SkalaTimes spoke with Mr. Cleanthous, a politician who for decades was actively engaged with the issue of the Larnaca port and marina and possesses in-depth knowledge of the matter.

Nikos Cleanthous was one of the founding members of the Democratic Party (DIKO) in 1976 and served as President of the DIKO Larnaca District Committee. In 1977, he was appointed by the Council of Ministers, under the presidency of Archbishop Makarios III, to the Investigative Committee for Purification in relation to the 1974 coup.
He served as Secretary of the Larnaca School Board, a member of the Judicial Committee of the Cyprus Football Association, and a member of the Patient Welfare Council of Larnaca General Hospital.
At party level, he was a member of DIKO’s Executive Bureau and Central Committee, while in 1998 he was elected Deputy President of the party, a position he held until 2006. On 22 October 2006, he ran for the presidency of DIKO, with Marios Karoyian ultimately being elected to the post.
He was elected Member of Parliament for Larnaca in the 1996 parliamentary elections and was re-elected in 2001 and 2006. In 2011, he ran for re-election but was unsuccessful.
During his term in the House of Representatives, he served, among other roles, as DIKO’s Parliamentary Spokesperson, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Works and of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, as well as a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Institutions, Values and the Commissioner for Administration.
Additionally, he served as Chairman of the House delegation to the EU–Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee, Head of the House delegation to the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of the Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union, and one of the three Vice Presidents of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Group in the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
