Πηγές με γνώση των διεργασιών ανέφεραν στον «Π» ότι η Κύπρος έχει υλοποιήσει όσα απαιτούνταν, τόσο σε επίπεδο τεχνολογικού εξοπλισμού όσο και σε επιχειρησιακό επίπεδο επί του πεδίου, προκειμένου να λάβει θετική αξιολόγηση από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή.
Η Κύπρος βρίσκεται πλέον ένα βήμα πιο κοντά στην ένταξή της στη Ζώνη Σένγκεν, καθώς η διαδικασία εκπλήρωσης των τεχνικών προϋποθέσεων εισέρχεται στην τελική της φάση. Σύμφωνα με δημοσιεύματα και πληροφορίες που συνέλεξε ο «Π» μιλώντας με πρόσωπα που έχουν γνώση των διαδικασιών, το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του τεχνοκρατικού έργου έχει ολοκληρωθεί. Σε επίπεδο Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής δεν έχει διατυπωθεί οποιαδήποτε αντίρρηση σε σχέση με την τεχνική ετοιμότητα της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας. Η τελική απόφαση θα ληφθεί σε επίπεδα Συμβουλίου της ΕΕ, δηλαδή από τα κράτη-μέλη, αλλά απαιτείται πρώτα μια έκθεση από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή. Το σχετικό κείμενο της τεχνικής ετοιμότητας της Κύπρου κυκλοφόρησε στα γραφεία των μελών της επιτροπής χωρίς να έχουν εκφραστεί ενστάσεις. Σημειώνεται ότι η επιτροπή λειτουργεί ως συλλογικό όργανο και οι επίτροποι ενημερώνονται για όλα τα θέματα που απαιτούν απόφαση. Η σχετική διαδικασία αναμένεται να κλείσει, αύριο, Παρασκευή, κατά τη συνεδρίαση του Κολεγίου των Επιτρόπων.
Ο εκπρόσωπος της Κομισιόν, Μάρκους Λάμερτ, δήλωσε χθες στο ΚΥΠΕ ότι η σχετική έκθεση θα παρουσιαστεί επισήμως στο Συμβούλιο της ΕΕ τον Σεπτέμβριο, ενώ η επιτροπή θεωρεί ότι η ένταξη της Κύπρου θα αποτελέσει σημαντικό βήμα, τόσο για τη χώρα όσο και για την ίδια την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση. Διευκρίνισε ότι η συγκεκριμένη έκθεση δεν συνιστά ακόμη την τελική απόφαση ένταξης, καθώς η διαδικασία αξιολόγησης συνεχίζεται και απομένουν πολιτικά βήματα σε επίπεδο κρατών-μελών. Ωστόσο, το ότι η έκθεση θα πάει στο συμβούλιο σημαίνει ότι υπάρχει θετική γνωμοδότηση από την επιτροπή.

Cyprus Moves Closer to Joining the Schengen Area – Technical Evaluation by the European Commission Nears Completion
Sources familiar with the process told Politis that Cyprus has implemented all the necessary requirements, both in terms of technological infrastructure and operational readiness on the ground, in order to receive a positive evaluation from the European Commission.
Cyprus is now one step closer to joining the Schengen Area, as the process of fulfilling the technical requirements enters its final stage. According to reports and information gathered by Politis through discussions with individuals familiar with the procedures, the majority of the technical work has been completed. At the level of the European Commission, no objections have been raised regarding the technical readiness of the Republic of Cyprus.
The final decision will be taken at the level of the EU Council, meaning by the member states, but this requires first an assessment report from the European Commission. The relevant document regarding Cyprus’s technical preparedness was circulated among the offices of the Commission members, without any objections being expressed.
It is noted that the Commission operates as a collective body and that commissioners are informed on all matters requiring a decision. The relevant procedure is expected to conclude tomorrow, Friday, during the meeting of the College of Commissioners.
European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert stated yesterday to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the relevant report will be officially presented to the EU Council in September. He added that the Commission considers Cyprus’s accession to the Schengen Area to be an important step, both for the country itself and for the European Union as a whole.
He clarified that the report does not yet constitute the final decision on accession, as the evaluation process is still ongoing and political steps remain at the level of the member states. However, the fact that the report will be submitted to the Council indicates that the Commission has issued a positive opinion.
