«Η κυπριακή δικαιοσύνη δεν μπορεί να διυλίζει τον κώνωπα και να καταπίνει την κάμηλο, επιδεικνύοντας αλλού ασύγγνωστη αμέλεια και βραδύτητα και αλλού υπερβάλλουσα σπουδή και ταχύτητα», αναφέρει η Ένωση Συντακτών
«Όταν ένας δημοσιογράφος διώκεται ποινικά, οι κίνδυνοι που ελλοχεύουν για την ελευθερία έκφρασης είναι ορατοί, απτοί και προβλέψιμοι», αναφέρει το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της Ένωσης Συντακτών Κύπρου, τονίζοντας ότι «μέσα σε ελάχιστες ημέρες ο Μακάριος Δρουσιώτης διερευνάται ποινικά για τρεις διαφορετικές υποθέσεις και με τρεις διαφορετικές ποινικές κατηγορίες».
Σημειώνει ότι «παρακολουθεί με έντονη ανησυχία την όλη εξέλιξη και μαζί με την υπόλοιπη κοινωνία της Κύπρου διερωτάται: Η υπόνοια για στοχοποίηση του συγκεκριμένου δημοσιογράφου από τις Αρχές είναι εύλογη ή παράλογη;».
Τονίζει δε ότι η κυπριακή δικαιοσύνη δεν μπορεί να διυλίζει τον κώνωπα και να καταπίνει την κάμηλο, επιδεικνύοντας αλλού ασύγγνωστη αμέλεια και βραδύτητα και αλλού υπερβάλλουσα σπουδή και ταχύτητα. «Η κυπριακή δικαιοσύνη», προσθέτει, «οφείλει να διασφαλίζει και την ισονομία».
Παράλληλα, ξεκαθαρίζει ότι θα παρακολουθεί στενά την έκβαση της όλης υπόθεσης, τονίζοντας πως θα επανέλθει όποτε το κρίνει επιβεβλημένο.

Σε μια ευνομούμενη πολιτεία κανένας πολίτης δεν είναι υπεράνω του Νόμου. Την ίδια ώρα, ούτε το σύστημα απονομής Δικαιοσύνης βρίσκεται υπεράνω κριτικής. Ο πολίτης που παρανομεί, διώκεται. Και η Δικαιοσύνη που λειτουργεί ετεροβαρώς, κρίνεται.
Όταν προσάφθηκαν ποινικές κατηγορίες εναντίον του δημοσιογράφου Μακάριου Δρουσιώτη για την υπόθεση «Σάντη», το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της Ένωσης Συντακτών Κύπρου εξέτασε το θέμα διεξοδικά αλλά έκρινε ότι οποιαδήποτε δημόσια τοποθέτησή του θα εκλαμβανόταν ως παρέμβαση στο έργο της Δικαιοσύνης. Γι’ αυτό δεν το έπραξε και δέχθηκε σκληρή κριτική γι’ αυτό. Τις επόμενες ημέρες ο Μακάριος Δρουσιώτης βρέθηκε αντιμέτωπος και με δεύτερη ποινική υπόθεση. Αυτή τη φορά για το βιβλίο του «Κράτος Μαφία». Κι αμέσως μετά ο εν λόγω δημοσιογράφος άρχισε να διερευνάται ποινικά και για τρίτη υπόθεση!
Μέσα σε ελάχιστες ημέρες ο Μακάριος Δρουσιώτης διερευνάται ποινικά για τρεις διαφορετικές υποθέσεις και με τρεις διαφορετικές ποινικές κατηγορίες: α) Διασπορά ψευδών ειδήσεων, β) Παραβίαση προσωπικών δεδομένων και γ) Διενέργεια παράνομου εράνου. Το ΔΣ της Ένωσης Συντακτών Κύπρου παρακολουθεί με έντονη ανησυχία την όλη εξέλιξη και μαζί με την υπόλοιπη κοινωνία της Κύπρου διερωτάται: Η υπόνοια για στοχοποίηση του συγκεκριμένου δημοσιογράφου από τις Αρχές είναι εύλογη ή παράλογη;

Όταν ένας δημοσιογράφος διώκεται ποινικά, οι κίνδυνοι που ελλοχεύουν για την ελευθερία έκφρασης είναι ορατοί, απτοί και προβλέψιμοι.
Το ΔΣ της Ένωσης Συντακτών Κύπρου θα παρακολουθεί στενά την έκβαση της όλης υπόθεσης και όποτε κρίνει επιβεβλημένο θα επανέλθει.
Intervention by the Cyprus Journalists’ Union on Makarios Drousiotis: “When a journalist is criminally prosecuted, the risks are clear, tangible and foreseeable”
“The Cypriot justice system cannot strain at a gnat while swallowing a camel, displaying in some cases inexcusable negligence and delay and, in others, excessive zeal and speed,” the Cyprus Journalists’ Union says.
“When a journalist is criminally prosecuted, the risks posed to freedom of expression are clear, tangible and foreseeable,” the Board of the Cyprus Journalists’ Union states, stressing that “within just a few days, Makarios Drousiotis has come under criminal investigation in three different cases and on three different criminal charges.”
The Union notes that it is “following the entire development with grave concern” and, together with the wider society of Cyprus, asks: “Is the suspicion that this particular journalist is being targeted by the authorities reasonable or unreasonable?”
It further stresses that the Cypriot justice system cannot strain at a gnat while swallowing a camel, displaying in some cases inexcusable negligence and delay and, in others, excessive zeal and speed. “The Cypriot justice system,” it adds, “must also ensure equality before the law.”
At the same time, the Union makes clear that it will closely monitor the outcome of the entire case and will intervene again whenever it deems it necessary.
Full statement by the Cyprus Journalists’ Union:
In a well-governed state, no citizen is above the law. At the same time, neither is the justice system above criticism. A citizen who breaks the law is prosecuted. And justice that operates unevenly must be scrutinized.
When criminal charges were brought against journalist Makarios Drousiotis in connection with the “Santi” case, the Board of the Cyprus Journalists’ Union examined the matter thoroughly but concluded that any public statement on its part would be perceived as interference in the work of the justice system. For this reason, it did not issue one, and it faced harsh criticism for doing so. In the following days, Makarios Drousiotis found himself facing a second criminal case. This time, it concerned his book Mafia State. And immediately afterwards, the journalist in question came under criminal investigation in connection with a third case!
Within just a few days, Makarios Drousiotis has come under criminal investigation in three different cases and on three different criminal charges: (a) dissemination of false news, (b) violation of personal data, and (c) conducting an illegal fundraising campaign. The Board of the Cyprus Journalists’ Union is following the entire development with grave concern and, together with the wider society of Cyprus, asks: Is the suspicion that this particular journalist is being targeted by the authorities reasonable or unreasonable?
The Cypriot justice system cannot strain at a gnat while swallowing a camel! It cannot display in some cases inexcusable negligence and delay and, in others, excessive zeal and speed. The Cypriot justice system must also ensure equality before the law.
When a journalist is criminally prosecuted, the risks posed to freedom of expression are clear, tangible and foreseeable.
The Board of the Cyprus Journalists’ Union will closely monitor the outcome of the entire case and will intervene again whenever it deems it necessary.
