Είναι πραγματικά απρόβλεπτες οι συνέπειες της κατάστασης για όλους του λαούς και τα κράτη της περιοχής και πρώτη προτεραιότητα πρέπει να αποτελέσει ο τερματισμός του πολέμου, δήλωσε στον ΑΣΤΡΑ ο εκπρόσωπος τύπου του ΑΚΕΛ Γιώργος Κουκουμάς.
Υπογράμμισε την ανάγκη αποκλιμάκωσης της κατάστασης μέσω της διπλωματίας, όπως ανέφερε και στην δήλωση του ο ΓΓ του ΟΗΕ.
Παράλληλα, είπε, έχει αποδειχθεί, παρά τα όσα ακούγαμε για την εξωτερική πολιτική και για το πόσο η κυβέρνηση αναβαθμίζει γεωπολιτικά τη χώρα μας, ότι η Κύπρος διατρέχει κίνδυνο από την παρουσία των Βρετανικών βάσεων και αυτό το επιβεβαιώνει και το προψεσινό κτύπημα στη βάση Ακρωτηρίου.
Σημείωσε ότι προκαλείται ανασφάλεια και ανησυχία όταν εκκενώνονται οι βάσεις, αεροδρόμια, σχολεία και κοινότητες. Αποδεικνύεται, ανέφερε ο κος Κουκουμάς, ότι οι βρετανικές βάσεις δεν είναι μόνο ένα απομεινάρι της αποικιοκρατίας αλλά είναι και ένας μαγνήτης απειλών και κινδύνων για τη χώρα μας, γιατί οι βρετανικές βάσεις χρησιμοποιούνται από τος δυτικούς στις πολεμικές τους επιχειρήσεις.
Επίσης, πρόσθεσε, με βάση τη συμφωνία εγκαθίδρυσης των βάσεων για τη χρήση τους από μη μέλος της κοινοπολιτείας χρειάζεται ενημέρωση και συγκατάθεση της ΚΔ, πράγμα ωστόσο που δεν έγινε, καθώς δεν λογαριάζουν κανένα ούτε οι Αμερικανοί ούτε οι Βρετανοί. Το ΑΚΕΛ, είπε, κάλεσε για πολλοστή φορά και με αφορμή αυτή τη συγκυρία, την κυβέρνηση να διαμηνύσει στη Βρετανία με κάθετο τρόπο ότι η Κύπρος και ο λαός της αντιτίθενται σε κάθε είδους στρατιωτική εμπλοκή των βάσεων στις συρράξεις της περιοχής.
Τόνισε ότι το διαχρονικό αίτημα για διάλυση των βρετανικών βάσεων στο νησί μας, είναι πιο επίκαιρο από ποτέ.
Πρόσθεσε ακόμη ότι η δήλωση του προέδρου ότι η Κύπρος δεν εμπλέκεται με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο σε στρατιωτικές επιχειρήσεις στην περιοχή θα πρέπει να διέπει έμπρακτα όλη την εξωτερική πολιτική της χώρας και τα μηνύματα που στέλνει.
Αποδεικνύεται, ανέφερε, ότι η πολιτική της πρόσδεσης προς τις ΗΠΑ και το Ισραήλ όχι μόνο δεν διασφαλίζει τα συμφέροντα του κυπριακού λαού αλλά δημιουργεί περισσότερους κινδύνους και εμπλέκει τη χώρα μας σε απειλές σε όλη την περιοχή.

Giorgos Koukoumas: The British bases are not only a remnant of colonialism but also a magnet for threats and dangers to our country
The consequences of the situation are truly unpredictable for all the peoples and states of the region, and the immediate priority must be to end the war, Giorgos Koukoumas, spokesperson of AKEL, told Astra Radio.
He stressed the need for de-escalation through diplomacy, as also highlighted in the statement by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
At the same time, he said, it has been shown—despite what we have been hearing about foreign policy and how much the government is supposedly upgrading our country geopolitically—that Cyprus is at risk from the presence of the British bases, a fact confirmed by the night-before-last attack on the RAF Akrotiri base.
He noted that insecurity and concern arise when bases, airports, schools, and communities are evacuated. Mr. Koukoumas stated that the British bases are not only a remnant of colonialism but also a magnet for threats and dangers to our country, because the British bases are used by Western powers in their military operations.
He also added that, according to the agreement establishing the bases, their use by a non-Commonwealth member requires the information and consent of the Republic of Cyprus. However, this was not done, as neither the Americans nor the British take anyone into account. AKEL, he said, has once again called on the government—on the occasion of this situation—to convey firmly to Britain that Cyprus and its people oppose any form of military involvement of the bases in the region’s conflicts.
He emphasized that the long-standing demand for the dismantling of the British bases on our island is more relevant than ever.
He further added that the President’s statement that Cyprus is not involved in any way in military operations in the region must be practically reflected in the country’s entire foreign policy and the messages it sends.
It is evident, he concluded, that the policy of alignment with the United States and Israel not only fails to safeguard the interests of the Cypriot people but also creates more risks and entangles our country in threats across the region.
