Αισιοδοξία φον ντερ Λάιεν για το Κυπριακό – Σήμερα ο διάδοχος του Χαν
Η πρόεδρος της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής Ούρσουλα φον ντερ Λάιεν γνωστοποίησε με ανάρτηση ότι είχε τηλεφωνική επικοινωνία την Κυριακή με τον Γενικό Γραμματέα του ΟΗΕ, Αντόνιο Γκουτέρες, εκφράζοντας αισιοδοξία για τις εξελίξεις στο Κυπριακό, καθώς και την πρόθεσή της να ανακοινώσει τη Δευτέρα, νέο ειδικό εκπρόσωπο εκ μέρους της Επιτροπής για το Κυπριακό.
«Ήταν μια καλή συνομιλία με τον Αντόνιο Γκουτέρες. Μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε μια ανανεωμένη δυναμική για την επίλυση του Κυπριακού στο πλαίσιο του ΟΗΕ και σύμφωνα με τις αρχές, τις αξίες και τη νομοθεσία της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης», ανέφερε η φον ντερ Λάιεν.
Η ίδια υπογράμμισε ότι «η ευκαιρία πρέπει να αξιοποιηθεί» και εξέφρασε την προσδοκία της «για πρόοδο τους επόμενους μήνες».
Παράλληλα, σημείωσε ότι η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή είναι έτοιμη να στηρίξει την προσπάθεια «με κάθε αναγκαία βοήθεια και τα μέσα που διαθέτει», ενώ ανακοίνωσε ότι «αύριο θα οριστεί νέος ειδικός εκπρόσωπος» της Κομισιόν για το Κυπριακό, ενόψει της εντατικοποίησης της ευρωπαϊκής εμπλοκής.
Ο πρώην Επίτροπος Διεύρυνσης της ΕΕ, Γιοχάνες Χαν, παραιτήθηκε στις 23 Μαρτίου από τη θέση του ειδικού απεσταλμένου της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής για το Κυπριακό, καθώς ανέλαβε την προεδρία του Γενικού Συμβουλίου της Κεντρικής Τράπεζας της Αυστρίας. Ο Χαν είχε διοριστεί στη θέση τον Μάιο του 2025, έπειτα από πρωτοβουλία για την ενίσχυση της εμπλοκής της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης στις συνομιλίες για την επανένωση της Κύπρου.
Μέχρι αργά το βράδυ της Κυριακής, δεν είχε καταστεί δυνατό να επιβεβαιώσει το ΚΥΠΕ τη διαδικασία που θα ακολουθήσει η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή για τον διορισμό του διαδόχου του Χαν, δεδομένου ότι η ανακοίνωση θα γίνει τη Δευτέρα, χωρίς να μεσολαβεί Κολλέγιο των Επιτρόπων.
Von der Leyen: “There Is Renewed Momentum on the Cyprus Issue” – European Commission to Appoint New Special Envoy
Von der Leyen optimistic about the Cyprus issue – Hahn’s successor to be announced today
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in a social media post that she held a telephone conversation on Sunday with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, expressing optimism about developments on the Cyprus issue and revealing her intention to announce a new European Commission Special Envoy for Cyprus on Monday.
“It was a good conversation with António Guterres. We can see renewed momentum towards resolving the Cyprus issue under the auspices of the United Nations and in line with the principles, values and legislation of the European Union,” von der Leyen stated.
She stressed that “this opportunity must be seized” and expressed her hope for “progress in the coming months.”
At the same time, she said that the European Commission stands ready to support the process “with all the necessary assistance and the tools at its disposal.” She also announced that “tomorrow a new Special Envoy” of the European Commission for the Cyprus issue will be appointed, as the EU prepares to step up its involvement in the peace process.
Former EU Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn resigned from his position as the European Commission’s Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue on 23 March after being appointed President of the General Council of the Austrian National Bank. Hahn had been appointed to the role in May 2025 as part of an initiative to strengthen the European Union’s involvement in the Cyprus reunification talks.
As of late Sunday evening, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) had not been able to confirm the procedure the European Commission will follow to appoint Hahn’s successor, given that the announcement is expected on Monday without a meeting of the College of Commissioners.
