First National Final of Neymar Jr’s Five in Cyprus

On Tuesday, 1st May, in Nicosia the first National Final of Neymar Jr’s Five was played to determine who is going to represent Cyprus at the World Final in Brazil this summer. 

I landed in Cyprus five weeks ago and during my grocery shopping in Metro I saw a Red Bull display in the corner of my eye. It filled me with excitement as it was for a special edition Red Bull can, produced with Neymar Jr and his signature tournament Neymar Jr’s Five. 

I had worked on the tournament since it’s launch two seasons ago when we were not sure how big it was going to get. I was excited that in the third season, along with  60 other countries, Cyprus was participating just as I arrived here.

The game is five-a-side football with a twist. Each match lasts 10 minutes, there is no goalkeeper and whenever a team scores, the opposition loses a player. This year’s tournament is open to any team of five to seven players aged 16 to 25. In each team two players over 25 are also allowed in the squad.
In 2017, over 100.000 players battled it out worldwide to be crowned World Champions, with Romania coming out victorious. Neymar Jr’s Five 2018 is even bigger. More than 60 countries from 6 continents will host tournament qualifiers, where players will be competing with the same dream of making it through to their National Final and book a ticket to the World Final. It will be celebrated for the third time in Praia Grande, Brazil, on July 21st. 

For Cyprus, this year was the first time they took part in the tournament. After qualifiers in Larnaca, Nicosia and Limassol/Pafos the National Final was held in a secret location in Nicosia and 16 teams played to secure the ticket to Brazil. 

The atmosphere was amazing, the sun was shining and the DJ was playing the best tunes. It was gripping until the very end when team “Ethniki Kitiou” outplayed team “FC Bayern Neverlosen” to take the trophy and make their dream come true!

The boys from Larnaca looked very strong and I am sure they can go a long way when they battle it out in Brazil against the champions from the other 60 odd countries.

Την Τρίτη 1η Μαΐου, στη Λευκωσία, πραγματοποιήθηκε ο πρώτος Εθνικός Τελικός του Five Neymar Jr για να καθοριστεί ποιος θα εκπροσωπήσει την Κύπρο στον Παγκόσμιο Τελικό της Βραζιλίας αυτό το καλοκαίρι.

Προσγειώθηκα στην Κύπρο πριν από πέντε εβδομάδες και κατά τη διάρκεια των αγορών μου στην υπεραγορά Μετρό στη Λευκωσία είδα μια οθόνη Red Bull. Ενθουσιάστηκα αφού επρόκειτο για μια ειδική έκδοση του Red Bull, που παρήχθη με τον Neymar Jr και το πρωτάθλημα υπογραφής του Neymar Jr’s Five.

Είχα δουλέψει στο τουρνουά από τότε που ξεκίνησε δύο σεζόν πριν, όταν ακόμα δεν ήμασταν σίγουροι πόσο θα πετύχαινε. Ήμουν ενθουσιασμένος που φέτος, στην τρίτη σεζόν, μαζί με 60 άλλες χώρες, η Κύπρος θα συμμετείχε, μόλις έφτασα εδώ.

Κάθε αγώνας διαρκεί 10 λεπτά, δεν υπάρχει τερματοφύλακας και κάθε φορά που μια ομάδα σκοράρει, η άλλη χάνει έναν παίκτη. Το φετινό τουρνουά ήταν ανοιχτό σε οποιαδήποτε ομάδα πέντε έως επτά παικτών ηλικίας 16 έως 25 ετών. Σε κάθε ομάδα δύο παίκτες άνω των 25 επιτρέπονται επίσης στην ομάδα.

Το 2017, περισσότεροι από 100.000 παίκτες αγωνίστηκαν παγκοσμίως, με τη Ρουμανία να βγαίνει νικηφόρα. Φέτος περισσότερες από 60 χώρες από 6 ηπείρους θα φιλοξενούν τους προκριματικούς τουρνουά, όπου οι παίκτες θα ανταγωνίζονται με το ίδιο όνειρο να φτάσουν στο Εθνικό Τελικό τους και να κλείσουν ένα εισιτήριο για τον Παγκόσμιο Τελικό.
Θα γιορταστει για τρίτη φορά στην Praia Grande της Βραζιλίας στις 21 Ιουλίου.

Για την Κύπρο, φέτος ήταν η πρώτη φορά που συμμετείχε στο τουρνουά. Μετά από προκριματικούς στη Λάρνακα, Λευκωσία και Λεμεσό / Πάφου ο Τελικός πραγματοποιήθηκε σε μυστική τοποθεσία στη Λευκωσία και 16 ομάδες έπαιξαν για να εξασφαλίσουν το εισιτήριο στη Βραζιλία.

Η ατμόσφαιρα ήταν εκπληκτική, ο ήλιος έλαμπε και ο DJ έπαιζε τα καλύτερα κομμάτια. Η ομάδα “Εθνική Κιτίου” ξεπέρασε την ομάδα “FC Bayern Neverlosen” και πήρε το τρόπαιο και να κάνουν το όνειρό τους πραγματικότητα!

Τα αγόρια από τη Λάρνακα φάνηκαν πολύ δυνατά και είμαι βέβαιος ότι μπορούν να προχωρήσουν ακόμα περισσότερο , όταν θα αγωνιστούν στη Βραζιλία εναντίον των πρωταθλητών από τις άλλες 60 χώρες.
