Inspired by the poem the cut, by Mika Antic

I will steal your shadow, put it on myself and
show it to everybody. You will be my way of dressing
all tender and secret. And even then, when
become worn, tattered, faded, I will not
take it off . On me you will decompose.
Because you are the only way to cover the nakedness of
this childish soul. And I will no longer be ashamed in front of
plants and birds.
On the ragged places together we will cry.

I’ll sew you up with the wind. Later, I know, I’ll confuse
my skin with yours. I do not know whether you
realize: it is not permeation.
It is being washed with you .

Love is to be cleaned with someone. Love is someone’s
scent, completely embroidered on us.
Tattooing by imagination.

Here, getting dark, and the world grows colder.
You are my way of warm. I will put you on
so that, so ebullient, I don’t catch a cold from
chill of my fear and loneliness.

2In her new series of charcoal drawings of seated people Nina Sumarac expresses gestures that speak about how she looks at the world from her own reality, a different reality, which often seems susceptible, bizarre and mysterious.

The artist is the outsider. The observer. The voyeur who appears engrossed in the subject in front of her, enjoying a moment of peace and solitude, seemingly undesired to be stared back at — especially since she deliberately leaves the subjects almost faceless. Normally, when you look at a portrait you look at the eyes and the face which are the most expressive. However, in this series she wants to rob the viewer of that intimacy and to make her work more mysterious and surreal. She concentrates on the body language to be communicative without the distraction of the eyes.

The portraits as such become the embodiment of her mind’s eye, open to be interpreted without the subject’s own facial expression to dictate the mood. In each drawing, the freedom of the figurative is juxtaposed with a modern abstract. The artist seems to work from a non-thoughtful flow of lines and gestures where she surrenders to her own inner emotion creating an inexhaustible rhythmic narration. She does this through expressive and intricate set of recurring patterns or marks, making a connection between the visual and the physical experience.

In her work, the Serbian artist Nina Sumarac illustrates the complex imagery of subconscious visions in a neo-surrealistic manner, which is an amalgamation of symbolism, conceptual thoughts, philosophical views, fantasies and dreams. She depicts aspects of human and societal relationships through expressively distorted figures, encompassing a broad range of emotional states. She brings to the work her personal sensibilities and experiences — often unflinchingly portraying the demons that she harbors, in the hope that by doing so she may transcend the dangers that threaten her from within .”
