Today, June 25, we celebrate the birthday of one of the brightest pop artists the world has ever known: George Michael, whose real name was Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou. He was born on June 25, 1963, in East Finchley, London, and passed away suddenly on December 25, 2016, at the age of 53.
Early Steps and Rise to Fame
George Michael grew up as the only boy among three siblings. His father, Kyriacos (“Jack”) Panayiotou, was of Cypriot origin, while his mother, Lesley Harrison, was a former dancer. At the age of 12, his parents sent him to study in Radlett, where he nurtured his dream of becoming a musician with daily passion. It was there he met Andrew Ridgeley, and together they formed a band that would later become known as Wham!
In 1982, they signed with Innervision and released their debut album Fantastic! in 1983, which reached No. 1 in the UK. This was followed by Make It Big (1984), featuring hits like “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Careless Whisper,” the latter released as a solo single by Michael—unsurprisingly reaching No. 1 in nearly 25 countries.

From 1991 to 1993, George was romantically involved with Argentine designer Anselmo Feleppa, who died of AIDS—a loss that deeply affected him. In 1998, following an arrest in Beverly Hills, he publicly came out as gay—a moment that both liberated him and brought public and legal challenges.
He became a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and participated in humanitarian causes, such as the Band Aid single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” (1984) and the Live Aid concert (1985). He was also known for his discreet but generous philanthropic efforts.
Tragic Loss & Legacy
On December 25, 2016, George Michael was found dead at his home in Goring-on-Thames. The coroner cited dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver as natural causes of death.
He was laid to rest in March 2017 at London’s Highgate Cemetery, next to his mother. His legacy includes the sale of over 100–125 million records, 2 Grammys, 5 Brit Awards, 6 Ivor Novello Awards, and many more accolades. In 2023, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
