Χαμένα στη γραφειοκρατία και κυρίως στην απροθυμία υιοθέτησης πρακτικών λύσεων, ώστε να υπερπηδηθούν εμπόδια και να κινηθούν οι διαδικασίες, είναι εδώ και χρόνια τα αρχαιολογικά αιτήματα της Λάρνακας.
Το σημαντικότερο είναι το μεγαλεπήβολο έργο της δημιουργίας Αρχαιολογικού Πάρκου, μέσω της ενοποίησης των αρχαιολογικών χώρων του αρχαίου Κιτίου, που έπρεπε να ξεκινήσει από το 2024, ωστόσο δεν προκηρύχθηκε καν ο αρχιτεκτονικός διαγωνισμός. Η πρώτη φάση του έργου, που εκτιμήθηκε στα €4 εκατ., περιλαμβάνει ενοποίηση του Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου με τον χώρο του αρχαίου λιμανιού και την οδό Αγίου Νεοφύτου, στην οποία εντοπίστηκε το 2016, κατά τις εργασίες για το αποχετευτικό, μεγάλο ψηφιδωτό με τους Άθλους του Ηρακλή.
Εδώ και δύο χρόνια οι διαδικασίες κινούνται με τραγικά αργούς ρυθμούς και το αδιανόητο είναι πως ουδείς είναι σε θέση ν’ αναφέρει πότε θα ξεκινήσει το έργο. Κι αυτό σε βάρος της πόλης που αναδείχθηκε Πολιτιστική Πρωτεύουσα της Ευρώπης κι όπως όλα δείχνουν το 2030 δεν θ’ μπορέσει να επιδείξει μερικούς από τους πιο σημαντικούς αρχαιολογικούς θησαυρούς της.
Ο «Φ» ανέδειξε ξανά το θέμα μέσω μεγάλου ρεπορτάζ τον Ιανουάριο του 2025 κι ένα χρόνο μετά ζήτησε από το Υφυπουργείο Πολιτισμού χρονοδιαγράμματα για την έναρξη των εργασιών, με δεδομένη και τη δυσφορία που εκφράζουν πλέον δημόσια οι φορείς της Λάρνακας για τις καθυστερήσεις, που αποδίδονται στο Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων. Οι απαντήσεις όχι μόνο δεν ξεκαθαρίζουν το τοπίο, αλλά αυξάνουν και τα ερωτήματα, κυρίως επειδή διαφαίνεται πως ο δρόμος για το έργο είναι πολύ μακρύς.
Η απάντηση σε σχέση με τα χρονοδιαγράμματα εστιάστηκε αρχικά στις ενέργειες του Τμήματος Αρχαιοτήτων στη Λάρνακα, στην οποία, όπως υποστηρίζεται, έγιναν «μεγάλης κλίμακας ανασκαφές, αλλά και συνεχή έργα συντήρησης των μνημείων», που «έχουν εμπλουτίσει το τουριστικό προϊόν και την ποιότητα ζωής». Συγκεκριμένα γίνεται αναφορά στην ανακαίνιση του Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου και σε «μεγάλης κλίμακας» έργο συντήρησης του Μεσαιωνικού Κάστρου.

The Larnaca Archaeological Park Has Hit a Wall – Many Questions Over Delays, the Department of Antiquities Blames Expropriations and Flooding
Lost in bureaucracy — and above all in the reluctance to adopt practical solutions that would overcome obstacles and move procedures forward — Larnaca’s archaeological demands have remained stalled for years.
The most important of these is the ambitious project to create an Archaeological Park through the unification of the archaeological sites of ancient Kition. The project was supposed to begin in 2024, yet not even the architectural competition has been announced. The first phase of the project, estimated at €4 million, includes the unification of the Archaeological Museum with the area of the ancient harbor and Agios Neophytos Street, where, in 2016, during sewerage works, a large mosaic depicting the Labors of Hercules was discovered.
For two years now, procedures have been moving at tragically slow pace, and the unthinkable is that no one is able to say when the project will actually begin. This comes at the expense of a city that has been designated European Capital of Culture and which, by all indications, in 2030 will not be able to showcase some of its most important archaeological treasures.
Phileleftheros highlighted the issue again through an extensive report in January 2025, and one year later asked the Deputy Ministry of Culture for timelines for the start of the works, especially given the growing public frustration expressed by Larnaca’s institutions over the delays, which are attributed to the Department of Antiquities. The answers not only fail to clarify the situation, but actually raise even more questions — mainly because it appears that the road to the project remains very long.
The response regarding timelines initially focused on the actions of the Department of Antiquities in Larnaca, where, it is claimed, “large-scale excavations and continuous monument conservation works” have been carried out, which “have enriched the tourism product and quality of life.” Specific reference is made to the renovation of the Archaeological Museum and to a “large-scale” conservation project at the Medieval Castle.
