Η Κύπρος θρηνεί το ηλικιωμένο ζευγάρι, το οποίο βρέθηκε απανθρακωμένο στο όχημά του κατά την προσπάθεια να απομακρυνθεί από την ολέθρια πυρκαγιά στη Λεμεσό.
Το ζευγάρι διέμενε στο εξοχικό του στην κοινότητα Συλίκου και επιχείρησε να εγκαταλείψε την περιοχή, όμως βρήκαν τραγικό θάνατο στον δρόμο Αλάσσας – Λάνιας.
Τα όσα προηγήθηκαν της τραγωδίας, περιγράφει ο κοινοτάρχης Συλίκου Νίκος Αρέστη, σε παρέμβασή του στο Πρωινό δρομολόγιο του ΡΙΚ, καταγγέλλοντας σοβαρά λάθη και παραλήψεις.
«Μας τηλεφώνησε η Αστυνομία να εκκενώσουμε το χωριό», είπε ο κ. Αρέστη, και τους δόθηκε η οδηγία να αναχωρήσουν από τον δρόμο Τριμίκλινης – Αγίου Μάμαντος.
Άρχισαν να χτυπούν τις καμπάνες του χωριού, ώστε να συγκεντρωθεί ο κόσμος στην πλατεία του χωριού και να ενημερωθεί. Το άτυχο ζευγάρι, όπως σημείωσε ο κοινοτάρχης, δεν είχε πάει στην πλατεία και έτσι έστειλαν άτομο να τους ειδοποιήσει.
Αρκετοί πολίτες, όπως διευκρινίζει οι κοινοτάρχης, επέλεξαν να φύγουν με τα οχήματά τους, ώστε να τα διασώσουν από τις φωτιές. Το τραγικό ζεύγος, φαίνεται πως δεν αντιλήφθηκε πως κάποιοι δρόμοι ήταν κλειστοί για την κυκλοφορία λόγω των πυρκαγιών.
Στην περιοχή δεν υπήρχε Αστυνομία.
Ακολούθησαν τη λάθος διαδρομή και δυστυχώς εντοπίστηκαν νεκροί, ώρες αργότερα, εντός του οχήματός τους.
Θα ακολουθήσει ταυτοποίηση με τη μέθοδο DNA.

Cyprus Mourns Elderly Couple Found Burnt in Their Car While Fleeing Limassol Wildfire
Cyprus is mourning the elderly couple who were found completely burnt inside their vehicle while trying to escape the devastating wildfire in Limassol.
The couple had been staying at their holiday home in the community of Sylikou and attempted to evacuate the area but tragically lost their lives on the road between Alassa and Lania.
The events leading up to the tragedy were described by Sylikou community leader, Nikos Aresti, during his interview on RIK’s morning show Proino Dromologio, where he condemned serious mistakes and oversights.
“The police called us and instructed us to evacuate the village,” said Mr. Aresti, noting that they were directed to leave via the Trimiklini–Agios Mamas road.
The village bells were rung to gather residents in the central square and inform them of the evacuation plan. However, the unfortunate couple did not make it to the square, and someone was sent to notify them personally.
Many residents, according to the community leader, chose to leave in their vehicles to try and save them from the approaching flames. It seems the ill-fated couple was unaware that certain roads had been closed to traffic due to the fire.
There was no police presence in the area.
They took the wrong route and, tragically, were found dead hours later inside their car.
DNA testing will be used to formally identify the victims.
